Show Results and Puppy Photos

Hi! This will be quick today because I am getting myself and the dogs ready for another show this weekend. We leave tomorrow! I have nothing packed yet, but at least the two girls have had their baths and are ready to go.

Show Results

Last weekend we were in Marshfield, WI. It was a good weekend. LaVonne's and my bitch Monami 'N Joyslyn Shades of Summer (Misti) took Winners Bitch both days, earning her a 4 point and a 3 point major. Added to her previous points, now she needs only 2 single points to earn her championship. She was just a couple days over a year old at these shows. Here are photos of LaVonne and Misti with her ribbons and prizes.

I showed Jenna and she took second place in her 6-9 puppy class on Saturday. She showed very well. The next day she took second again but I was disappointed because she did not carry her tail up, which is so unusual for her. I don't know what got into her, but it was not a good day according to her.

Josh had a great weekend. He took Best of Breed and Best Owner Handled in Breed both days. In Saturday's Owner Handled Group, he took 4th place, then went on to the regular Group and took 3rd place. On Sunday, he took Owner Handled Group 1.

We had rainy weather and lots of wet grass, mud, and puddles at the fairgrounds on Saturday. Josh nearly gave me heart failure because when I let him out of his crate so I could pick him up and carry him across the way to the building where the show rings were, he got away from me and ran out open garage door of the grooming building -- straight through the mud and wet grass! It was bad enough that he ran into a fairgrounds road that could have had vehicles moving on it, but the MUD!!! I finally got him to stop, stand still, and let me pick him up. Do not ask me how I managed to get the wet mud off his feet and his coat clean and dry in the 15 minutes I had allowed myself before going to the ring. Somehow (a miracle??), I got him cleaned up.

I'll post Josh's Group 3 and Group 1 photos when I get them.

Congratulations also goes to the Haucks. Their Joyslyn's Mystic Wind (Mysti) earned a point with her handler Sue Cannimore. Here is a photo Sue posted on her FB page.

Mysti is a full sister to Greta.

Notes from Others

From Joe about Abby: "Every day is something new. Today she somehow climbed atop the refrigerator which was mindboggling. Afraid of rain and thunder and will not go up my carpeted and closed stairs. Exactly the way she was with you. And, you must hold her horizontally, never vertically!"

From Judy about Ty and Izzy: "I hope you have a wonderful birthday today. With all of those puppies you can't miss! Izzy has taken 2 of the 4 classes so we are on our way to becoming a therapy dog. We should try for the canine good citizen award also. She still doesn't have a good down, so we can't pass yet. There are 2 other Lhasas in the class so she wants a meet and greet! Ty is scheduled for a trial in several weeks...4 obstacles and we will be finished.  I think that is a very safe start."

From Kristi about Duncan, who now has a new name: "Just a quick update. He has fully integrated into our routine. At first when I left the room we were in, the 2 boys were on my heels. He stayed back a bit but was curious and has to follow at a distance. Now I get up he is the first one at my heels. It has been a truly remarkable experience watching him come into his own here.  His favorite is Vader. They are like two peas in a pod. Which I think helped him the most because Vader is such a mommy boy. I have even started to get kisses from him which just melts my heart. I know he will always be your Duncan, but here he is our Kenobi...It has worked out wonderfully adding him to our home and his personality truly embodies Obi Wan Kenobi."

I think we can all agree that

Mid-August Musings -- And Some Puppy Pictures!

Here is a card I received in honor of my August birthday! It was so flattering that I nearly forgot how old I was.

I've always been proud to be a Leo!

Here's what Lewis Carroll wrote about birthdays: "There are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents ... and only one for birthday presents, you know."

The government presented me with a Medicare card in honor of this birthday.

I celebrated my birthday this year in Florida with my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. We don't get to see each other often because of the distance between Florida and Illinois, so it was nice to be together again. Of course, every grandma is eager to get to see her grandchildren.

I returned home the day after my birthday, and we celebrated my special day by going out to dinner because there was no way I was going to cook after sitting in airports and on airplanes from 9:30 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon, then driving another hour and a half to get home. It was especially nice because friends we had not seen in ages were having dinner at the same restaurant so we were able to spend time with them and catch up on each other's lives and kids.

Birthday cake in Florida

One very fitting present -- a T-shirt!
My son-in-law, an avid Lego fan, found these dog show Legos for me! Here is my attempt at setting up the judge, the handler, the dog, and the trophies as if for a dog show photo.

And here is an actual dog show photo of Greta (Joyslyn's No Regrets) after she won her first major at the Burlington Kennel Club show in July. I really hate the background, and I also wonder what or who the judge was glaring at, but Greta looks great!

Disappointing News

I hate to report this as much as I hated hearing it, but Windy is not going to have puppies. I took her to the vet for an x-ray on Wednesday afternoon, thinking the x-ray would show four puppies. No such luck. She certainly is hefty enough to be carrying puppies! As of today, she began her diet!

I know that many of you who were farther down on our waiting list were expecting to get a puppy from Windy's litter. I am sorry that that is not going to happen. Our next litter is not planned until early 2017.

Puppy Pictures

The puppies we do have are adorable. Eyes are open, they are moving around a lot and making attempts to play with each other. One little guy's favorite sleeping position is on his back. Maggie's puppies are three weeks two days old. Luna's will be three weeks old tomorrow.

Here are the photos we took this afternoon:

Notes and Pictures from Others

Joe sent this photo of Abby and wrote, "After wearing 4 groomers out! Yes 4!"

Angela wrote, "Hi there!  Wanted to send an update on the girls as it has been a while.  Loki is doing well.  She is turning into quite the crab and complains loudly when she is made to go outside, get off my lap, or basically do anything she doesn't want to.  My daughter had to move home and she brought two dogs with her for a grand total of five dogs, of which Loki is slowest.  This does not make her happy.  When returning to the house from the back yard she grumbles all the way up the stairs because she is last.  Loki has also formed an alliance with one of my daughter's dogs and they caught a full size rabbit between the two of them and Loki caught a bunny on her own.  I read in your blog that another of your offspring killed a rabbit as well so I am convinced you are unwittingly breeding hunting dogs. Kila is hanging in there.  She continues to be happy 100% of the time and doesn't do anything unless Loki tells her to.  She has had some back pain that was successfully managed with medication and her hind legs no longer bend at all but she is able to get around fine and is still faster than Loki.  We are paying close attention to her weight as the vet has advised me that being overweight will dramatically speed up the destruction of her joints.  We also discourage jumping, stairs, and running on hard surfaces, again as per the vet recommendations.  So far it is working, she is happy and active so that is all that matters."

Kathy wrote about Sophie: "I can’t believe that time has gone so quickly and that Sophie is nine months old now!  She has been such a delight, and gives us something to smile (or fuss) about every day. LOL  I keep her busy with new things—she has been to two training classes, traveled to the beach, has stayed with a pet sitter with other dogs for several days, gets lots of rides with me, and gets a lot of visits with other dogs and people.  (She immediately likes the other dogs, but takes a while with the people.)  I think she would enjoy both agility and/or nose work, but I am the one who is too old and cranky for that!  LOL  Last weekend we took her for a ride to Pere Marquette State Park and as we were sitting on the terrace enjoying a cup of coffee, we started talking to a family with a little boy around 6 or 7 years old.  Sophie made up to him, and he asked me if she could do any “tricks”.  I just happened to have a bag of treats (imagine that!), so I showed him some of her obedience commands, and then her “Give me brown paw” and Give me white paw” commands.  He offered us $8,000.00 for her.  LOL  Mike said, “You’re getting close!”

Another Important August Birthday

On August 22nd, our Ch. Joyslyn's Secrets of the Heart will be 14 years old. Secret is going strong and acts and looks much younger than her actual years. In honor of her 14th, I am sharing two photos. The first was taken the day she won her first points, which happened to be a major, from the puppy class. The second photo is of her winning Reserve Winners Bitch at the American Lhasa Apso Club's Regional Specialty in 2003.

Secret is the dam of our GCh. Joyslyn's Heartbreaker (Breaker), the granddam of GCh. Joyslyn MLS Dakota Wind Breaker (Josh), and the granddam of Joyslyn MLS Dakota Je Na Sais Quoi (Jenna). She is a little girl - about 11.5 pounds. Her favorite past-time was and still remains killing squeakers and ripping stuffing out of toys.

August and Its "Dog Days Of Summer"

"The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs" or “dog days." The name came about because they associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star" because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky…The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the dog days of summer as being July 3 until August 11."

New Puppies

The news many readers have been waiting for! The puppies have been born! Duncan and Maggie's litter was born on July 26, and Josh and Luna's litter was born on July 29. In both cases, I was basically up all night and wishing things would hurry along.

Here are pictures of the 10-day old Duncan and Maggie kids.

And here are the week old Josh and Luna puppies.

A note to those of you on the waiting list: I have told you that the list is long, and it is. I am in the process of contacting those on the list in the order in which they appear on the list (i.e., in the order in which they contacted me). Some people have not yet responded and if I do not hear from them soon, I will keep moving down the list. Some have indicated that they want only a specific color that these litters do not have. Some have found puppies from other breeders. If you want to contact me to see where you are on the list, please feel free to do so. The majority of people on the list want females, so those of you farther down the list who want boys were already contacted. At the present time, all but one male has been reserved.

In other puppy news, signs are favorable that Breaker and Windy's litter will be born around August 26, so there is hope for some of you who want puppies and are farther down on the list. I'll keep everyone posted via email. One person found my message in her spam folder so if you are waiting to hear from me, check your spam folders. It might also help if you added joyslynslhasas@outlook.com to your address book. Both Breaker and Windy are excellent producers and are now eligible for their Register of Merit Awards from the American Lhasa Apso Club.

Show Results

When I last posted, we were getting ready for the dog show that was being held here in Macomb. Although the weather was beastly hot, we had a great turn out of exhibitors, spectators, and vendors. For the first time collaboration among the city, the university, and the Burlington Kennel Club, things went very smoothly. Naturally, there's a list of things we will work on for next year, but I think that is always true of any big endeavor.

The Joyslyn's dogs did well. The surprise of the weekend for us was that not only did Greta finally get her tail up but she also was awarded Winners Bitch for a 3 point major. Jenna took Reserve to Greta on Saturday. On Sunday Greta took Reserve. Jenna had to go back in the ring with another person on Sunday, someone she did not know, and she was frightened and would not walk. Josh did well also. He took Best Opposite Sex both days, Best of Breed Owner Handled, and then an Owner Handled Group 4 on Saturday and Group 3 on Sunday.

A puppy (Misti) I co-bred and co-own with LaVonne Bennett won a 5-point major in West Bend over the July 4 weekend. LaVonne sent me a photo to share.

Monami N Joyslyn's Shades of Summer
LaVonne's Joyslyn MLS Dakota Windy Winter Night Mon Ami (Cinder) took Winners Bitch for 2 points at the recent show in Waukesha, WI.

Suggested Reading

Show Sight magazine featured the Lhasa Apso in its July 2016, Vol. 23 #12, issue on pages 298-312. You can view the issue online at http://www.showsightmagazine.com/#!digital-issue/cf4j Click the link. When the online magazine comes up (give it time to load)  there will be a table of contents icon on the menu to the left. When you click it, the TOC appears; scroll down at bit and you will see "Lhasa Apso" and the page number 299. There is an option to turn pages into a pdf file, which is what I did for pages 299-312 as the range. I think it's easier to read that way. It can also be printed. Now I have the Lhasa feature as a pdf so I can keep it with all the other Lhasa articles I've hung on to over the years.

Some Photos and Notes from Others

Reports of Duncan in his new home are positive! Kristi has two Lhasa males. The younger of the two is Vader, a Joyslyn's Lhasa. She recently added Duncan (three year old Ch. Joyslyn's Highly Classified) to her Lhasa family. She wrote about Duncan that his house training is nearly done and that he and Tricki "decided to be good friends." She added, "…It is funny he [Duncan] is the oldest of the 3 but acts like the youngest. He wants to play all the time. And will bark at the 2 boys if they are being lazy. I think he loves his new home and I am so privileged that you allowed him to join our 'pack.'"

It appears that Duncan is relaxed and comfy in his new home and has been rubbing himself all over the sofa!

Kathy and Marilyn recently got together with their Joyslyn Lhasas for a play date. Marilyn reported that the girls enjoy being with each other and play, play, play.

I have two weekends of shows this month plus a lot of other things going on. Life is busy but also, as you all know by now...
